If you play and teach recorder I highly recommend joining the Portland Recorder Society and also going to the Wind and Waves weekend recorder workshop in April at the Sitka Art Center on the Oregon coast. Wind and Waves is a wonderful opportunity to revel in recorder playing and enjoy the beauty of Cascade Head. Registration begins January 13th and fills up fast. Come work on a wide variety of recorder music from the past and present under the guidance of an internationally renowned faculty. Winds and Waves offers graded technique and repertoire classes, plus general "grand consort" sessions-all in a spruce-hemlock forest perched above the Salmon River estuary. Take a break for three days and open yourself up to inspiration from the setting, the teaching, and the music.
Faculty will include Frances Blaker, Letitia Berlin, Cléa Galhano, and Sitka Center's Recorder Resident David Castelo, all of whom perform, record, teach, and conduct workshops throughout the United States and abroad. Blaker, who also composes for recorder and other instruments, and Berlin are based in the San Francisco Bay area and form the duo Tibia. Galhano, originally from Brazil, lives and teaches in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is on the faculty of Macalester College and other Twin Cities institutions. Castelo is one of the leading exponents of early music in Brazil and lectures at many music institutions in his country.
